Networking

I have our computers at the new house set up “in” (actually around the corner from) the living room, which is OK except Geoff’s computer is loud-he doesn’t agree with that, but this is my blog, so I can say whatever I want. ;) I would like to put the computers themselves in a nearby closet- which I think will work out pretty well- we even ran the cable into the closet instead of the room anticipating this (we’ll also need to add a grounded outlet in there.)

Being the dork that I am, I made a little chart detailing how it will work:

new computer setup

Basically, everything will go into the closet except the monitors and two USB hubs to plug the keyboards, mice, and other peripherals into. This will also keep cat hair away from the computers, which has got to be a good thing.

My main question at this point is how to handle sound. There are three computers that need sound and two sets of speakers. There are occasions when both Geoff and I are using the sound on our computers at the same time.

Also, I’m still not sure what I will use as my main computer. I’ve been using Ubuntu for years now, and I love it, but I am really missing using photoshop at home. I may switch over to using the mac mini (sigh) even though I really don’t want to. If that happened, the Ubuntu computer would remain in the closet and act as a file server and (possibly) a home automation server if I ever get around to setting any of that stuff up. It really bugs me that I may have to switch, though, because I have everyhting set up just so.

Well you could always try your luck with Wine if you miss Photoshop that much (http://wiki.winehq.org/AdobePhotoshop). Just make sure you have a couple of glasses of actual wine nearby during the setup process to help ease frustrations :) .

I have installed Photoshop via wine- it was so slow as to be unusable. Also, a couple of the filters didn’t work. :(

That chart is so dorky. It’s adorable.

I’m not sure if it’s more or less dorky than my hand painted networking chart from last February: http://www.flickr.com/photos/nirak/2242950723/

Oh, and the Vaio laptop has suddenly lost wireless ability. Suck.
